South Africa, Cameroon and now – Tanzania. Riga TechGirls has organised STEM Schools for girls in 3 African countries already. A week long program for girls where we talk about business making and basics of programming. Filling out a team and idea canvas, writing basic code and making homepages – that’s what is happening in those schools specifically targeted for girls. In Tanzania we have even expanded to do an online program, so more girls can join.
But there could be a question – why? We in Riga TechGirls believe in knowledge sharing. Since 2020, we have been organizing Summer Schools for Girls in Latvia. We are also experts in giving inspiration for girls and women to seek tech as their future workspace. That’s why, thanks to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Latvia, we started to develop cooperation development projects and change the lives of girls not only in Latvia, but also internationally.
Our latest project is now happening in Tanzania together with Success Hands Tanzania Initiative. The program is made up of two parts – an onsite 5-day school and an online program. As previously mentioned, on-site we taught the girls about making their own company and how to program. The main goal was to inspire the girls to seek more knowledge and be more confident in themselves.
Right now we have also finished the online program. 8 lectures about different IT profession topics with practical exercises so that the girls could get a taste of the tech industry. Each month about 30 girls had the possibility to learn more.
But that is only the beginning. The program will continue in 2026 and will have an impact on even more girls all thanks to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Latvia.
